Tips for New Twin Moms

I have been a mother of twins for 816 days. Here is what I have learned in that period of time:

1. Be prepared to answer very inappropriate and personal questions from complete strangers such as- “did you have vaginal delivery?” & “did you do
in vitro?” (the polite answer to both these is none of your business)

2. You will be answering the same three questions at least ten times a day when you go out in public- “are they identical?”, “can you tell them apart?” and “do twins run in your family?” (yes, yes, no)

3. Everyone over the age of 50 will smile at you when they see you approaching with your double stroller, especially senior citizens

4. You will learn to accomplish everything with one hand while holding a baby in the other, while using your foot to rock another baby in the bouncer

5. Meet your new best friend, her name is caffeine

6. People will start to give up their seats and spots in line when you are only 5 months pregnant, because you already look like you are “ready to pop”

7. Suck it up and buy the mini-van, you will not regret it

8. Have baby essentials like diapers and wipes on every floor of your home

9. Buy multiples of everything because they WILL want to play with the same toy at the same time

10. Start preparing an hour before you actually have to arrive somewhere, estimate 20 minutes per child

11. If you had a dollar for every time you heard- “Boy don't you have your hands full?” you would be a very wealthy lady

12. Accept all offers of help, even if you don't like the inefficient way your mother-in-law loads your dishwasher

13. In the words of Elsa “LET IT GO”, because your house will not look presentable and your kids will not be perfectly clean and dressed at all times

14. You will marvel at your new superhuman strength to carry a diaper bag and TWO 40 lbs. car seats at the same time, because there is NO way you are making three trips to the car in that blizzard

15. Restock your diaper bag every night so it is ready for the next day, it will be one less thing you will have to worry about

16. TRY to keep the babies on the same schedule, this will make your life a lot easier and give you some much deserved downtime

17. You will bond with other mothers of multiples, because mothers of singletons will never REALLY get it

18. Multitasking master- is how you will secretly refer to yourself in your head and you will amaze everyone around you with your mad multitasking skills

19. Do not feel pressured to breastfeed your twins. 99% of nurses have never done it and have NO idea what that is really like. Do what feels right for you, no one else.

20. A king size bed with mattress protector are essential

21. Join a local Facebook goups were other mom's buy and sell baby/kid items, often brand new. You can save a lot by buying used, especially since you will need double of many things.

22. It DOES get easier. With every month your twins will get more and more independent and be able to do more on their own. You will not be a sleep deprived zombie milk machine for the rest of your life, even though it might feel that way for a while.
